Veterans Day, observed annually on November 11th, is a time for the nation to reflect on and honor the sacrifices made by military veterans in service to the United States. Originally known as Armistice Day, the day marks the end of World War I, when hostilities ceased on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Today, Veterans Day is a solemn occasion to recognize the bravery, dedication, and selflessness of those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, from past conflicts to the present day.
Across the country, communities hold ceremonies, parades, and other events to express gratitude to veterans and their families. Many public buildings and homes are adorned with the American flag, a symbol of the freedom and peace that veterans have fought to preserve. While the day is a moment of national pride, it also serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by veterans, including mental health issues and the transition to civilian life.
On Veterans Day, let us not only honor the courage of those who have served but also commit to supporting them as they return home. Whether through volunteer work, donations, or simply saying “thank you,” there are many ways to show appreciation for their invaluable contributions to our nation’s freedom.
Mansfield’s Veterans Day Parade starts at 10:30 am this morning. The parade starts at the five-way light (Park Ave West and Bowman St.) and goes to Central Park.
