MANSFIELD, Ohio — A Mansfield stabbing brought Richland County Sheriff’s Office deputies to 1040 Lexington Ontario Road at approximately 12:29 a.m. Aug. 11, 2026, according to a news release from the agency.
Upon arrival, deputies found a male juvenile suffering from multiple stab wounds, along with a suspect and witnesses at the scene, the sheriff’s office said. First responders began life-saving measures, and the Springfield Township Fire Department transported the victim to the OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital Emergency Room, where he later died of his injuries.
The suspect was identified as 16-year-old Brodie Raedyn Gibson of Mansfield. After consultation with the Richland County Prosecutor’s Office, Gibson was taken into custody and charged with murder. He is being held at the Richland County Juvenile Detention Center, the release said.
What witnesses told deputies after the Mansfield stabbing
According to Richland County Sheriff’s Office case records (case No. 2026-00019743), an adult resident at the home told Deputy David Pfarr she had been sleeping when Gibson called, speaking rapidly, and asked to come over because something was wrong with his vehicle and he felt unsafe. She said she heard a vehicle outside, checked that a garage door was locked, and told Gibson he was not welcome and needed to leave.
The resident told deputies Gibson called again and said she needed to let him inside because there was a man in the house. She said she hung up and spoke with her juvenile daughter, asking whether anyone was down in her room. According to the report, the daughter appeared deceptive. The resident said Gibson then began banging on a back door wanting to get inside.
According to the resident’s statement, the juvenile victim — described in the report as the daughter’s current boyfriend — appeared and made comments about wanting to fight Gibson, whom the resident identified as the daughter’s ex-boyfriend. The resident said she told Gibson to go away and told the victim not to fight with anyone.
The resident told deputies that around that time Gibson must have gained entry from the basement, came up the stairs and started to fight with the victim. She said she did not see any weapons, but the victim got hit and there was a lot of blood. She said she attempted to break up the physical altercation and that the victim went toward the front door. She said she did not know which way Gibson went, according to the report.
After approximately two minutes, the resident said, Gibson was banging on the front door requesting to go to the hospital because he was bleeding and was going to die. She said she grabbed her keys and, when she went out to her vehicle, her daughter was in the front yard yelling for help, at which point they dialed 911, according to her statement to deputies.
Arrest and investigation
Following the Mansfield stabbing, A supplemental report by Deputy Ethan Rogers stated that, based on information gathered at the scene, the female juvenile resident had snuck the victim into her bedroom, the suspect — her ex-boyfriend — showed up to the residence and ultimately made entry, and an altercation started between the suspect and the victim. The altercation eventually went outside, where deputies arrived and saw them, the report said.
While deputies were still on scene, they were advised the victim had been pronounced deceased at the hospital, according to the supplemental report. Deputies reported that Gibson made statements claiming self-defense. The reported weapon was a knife or cutting instrument. Gibson was taken into custody at the scene shortly after deputies arrived. A search for the knife was not successful at that time amid heavy rain, according to the reports. The investigation remained active pending further work.
