Shelby City Schools Lock Down

NewsCommunityShelby City Schools Lock Down

Letter from Michael G. Browning, Superintendent.

April 28, 2026
Dear Shelby Families,
Just after noon today, Shelby High School received a report of a threat of a vehicle in the parking lot with someone with explosives. In response, we immediately implemented our safety protocols and put the high school on a Level 2 Lockdown and the PK-8 on a Level 1 Lockdown while Shelby Police and Richland County Sheriff responded. Out of an abundance of caution, we also canceled Preschool classes because the buildings were under lockdown while students were coming to school.
Shelby Police and the Richland County Sheriff’s Office conducted a thorough sweep of the campus and parking areas. No threat was found, and authorities have determined this to be a false report, commonly referred to as a “swatting” incident.
Shelby Police have determined it is safe for students to resume normal school activities. Officers will remain on campus monitoring the situation for the rest of the afternoon. Law enforcement will investigate the phone call to determine further action against the caller. Student safety will always be at the forefront of what we do. We very much appreciate the quick response from both the Shelby Police and the Richland County Sheriff’s Office, and the cooperation of our students and staff during this situation.

Sincerely,
MDGBauy Michael G. Browning
Superintendent, Shelby City Schools
